Overview

A mail exchanger (MX) record identifies the location of a domain's mail server. The record directs computers on the Internet where to send emails for a specific domain. Unfortunately, the record also informs spammers of the location of a domain's mail server. By changing the MX record, a company can re-route its inbound email to a server which has GFI MailEssentials installed, to check/filter messages for spam and viruses before delivering the clean emails to the company's mail server.

To find out what your MX record should be for a domain, navigate to your domain properties (Go to Management > Domains and select your domain) and view the Domain MX Records section at the bottom right of the page:





On the 4 lines of text ignore the "yourdomain.com in MX" portions; the remainder contains the desired record priority (10 and 90) and the respective record entries (yourdomain.com.pri-mx.na0X0Y.smtproutes.com, for example). Replace your existing MX records with these.

If you have any sibling domains, you would also change those MX Records, but use the sibling domain name instead of the primary domain name (siblingdomain.com.pri-mx.na0X0Y.smtproutes.com, for example).
