Overview
This article provides important information about the progress of a background scan in GFI MailEssentials.
Information
When you enable background scanning, MailEssentials instructs the Microsoft Exchange Server to start the background scan. The emails which need to be scanned by MailEssentials are submitted by the Microsoft Exchange Information Store for scanning. MailEssentials will not have any information on the number of emails which need to be scanned or when they are to be scanned.
Virus Scan Application Programming Interface (VSAPI) does not offer the functionality of showing the background scan progress.
Technical Information
The background scanning feature offered by VSAPI is not task-based. It means that it does not take the approach of starting a task for which the amount of scanning to be done is known and the amount of completed monitored.
VSAPI background scanning is a low priority task. This means that other tasks such as a new email being saved to the Microsoft Exchange Information Store take precedence.
Note: It is not possible to get details on the number of virus emails that were blocked during a background scan using MailEssentials since VSAPI does not provide such counters. However, you can use the Performance Monitor to show the total number of emails processed or blocked. The following Performance Monitor counters are available:
- Messages Processed
- Messages Processed/sec
- Messages Cleaned
- Messages Cleaned/sec
- Messages Quarantined
