Overview
Email encryption involves disguising the content of email messages to protect potentially sensitive information from being read by anyone other than the intended recipients.
This article provides clarification on how MailEssentials deals with Encrypted Emails.
Information
In order to scan emails, MailEssentials retrieves the emails from either the mail flow directly (while the mail server is receiving or sending) or from the Exchange Information Store (to scan already received and saved emails for spam and viruses).
Regardless of the email source, the scanning process is always the same as illustrated below:
MailEssentials does not handle email traffic between the encryption service and the SMTP server, but scans what it receives and releases to the pickup folder of the SMTP server on which MailEssentials is installed, or blocks/quarantines the emails if the emails are determined to be spam/malware.
For this reason, the configuration to send the emails to an encryption service (such as SEPPmail) must be done on the SMTP server on which MailEssentials is installed and not MailEssentials itself.
Inbound or outbound emails that are encrypted do not interfere with the regular mail flow processing in MailEssentials as the encryption/decryption process is handled by the SMTP server.
