Overview
This article aims to guide you in retrieving a list of licensed users depending on the way MailEssentials is installed in your environment.
Information
The process of retrieving the list of licensed users depends on the environment. GFI MailEssentials uses several different ways to retrieve users depending on the installation environment.
GFI MailEssentials installed in Active Directory mode or Remote Active Directory mode
When GFI MailEssentials is not installed on the same machine as your mail server and Active Directory is present, then GFI MailEssentials retrieves mail-enabled users from the Active Directory domain of which the GFI MailEssentials machine forms part.
When GFI MailEssentials is installed on a machine that is not joined to a domain (such as a DMZ), it can be configured to retrieve mail-enabled users from a remote Active Directory domain using LDAP.
The list of users can be obtained from the Active Directory server.
If you have tracing enabled, the list of users may be obtained from the ..\GFI\MailEssentials\Attendant\DebugLogs\usercntad.log
file.
If this file is not present and GFI MailEssentials is installed in the SMTP mode (such as on an SMTP relay server), refer to the GFI MailEssentials installed in SMTP mode section below.
GFI MailEssentials installed on the Exchange machine
When GFI MailEssentials is installed on the same machine as Exchange, GFI MailEssentials retrieves the Active Directory users that have a mailbox on the same Exchange Server.
The list of users can be obtained from the Active Directory server or from the Exchange server.
If you have tracing enabled, the list of users may be obtained from the ..\GFI\MailEssentials\Attendant\DebugLogs\usercntvsapi.txt
file.
GFI MailEssentials installed in SMTP mode
When you choose to install GFI MailEssentials in SMTP mode, the list of local users is stored in a database managed by GFI MailEssentials.
The list of users can be retrieved from the GFI MailEssentials Configuration UI, by navigating to General > Settings and selecting the User Manager tab.
If you have tracing enabled, the list of users may be obtained from the ..\GFI\MailEssentials\Antispam\DebugLogs\usertimecnt.txt
file.
