Mailflow stops with Failed VSE error on ME 20.3

Overview

Mailflow stops and emails reach the FailedMails folder due to Failed VSE. Logs show that AV engine(s) failed to initialize.

Solution

The solution is to upgrade to the latest version of GFI MailEssentials:

  1. Download the latest version, by visiting either of the following links:
    Note

You will need to update your license if you're upgrading to a different major version of GFI MailEssentials.

  2. Make a backup of your settings
  3. Go to Control Panel.

  4. Locate MailEssentials and select Uninstall.

  5. After completing the uninstall process, locate the previously downloaded MailEssentials installer.

  6. Verify that the file is not blocked

  7. Right-click on the installer and select Run as Administrator.

  8. Verify that the installer is pointed to the same install location as the previous installation and that the previous settings should be used.
The backup will not be needed and can then be deleted once you have confirmed that the settings are the same.

  9. Make sure to apply all available patches by opening the GFI MailEssentials Configuration UI and navigating to General Settings > Product Updates

If updating is not a solution, you can follow the steps below, as a workaround:

  1. Deactivate the failing Virus Scanning Engine:
    • Open the GFI MailEssentials Configuration UI.
    • Navigate to Email Security > Virus Scanning Engines.
    • Open the General tab for the failing Virus Scanning Engine.
    • Uncheck the "Enable Gateway Scanning (SMTP)" option.
    • Apply the changes.
  2. Manually updated the failing VSE, by following the steps in the "Manual Update Process for the Virus Scanning Engines" article.
  3. Re-process the failed emails by following the steps in the "Reprocessing Emails moved to the FailedMails folder" article.
